about

The piano jazz trio format was, of course, an invention of pianists, establishing a triangular hierarchy with the piano on top and the double bass / drums positioned on the bottom. When the leader of such a trio is the bassist or the drummer , almost certain is that there is the idea to turn this kind of instrumentation into a more democratic one. Simply because a bassist or a drummer don’t imagine the dynamics of the group, and compose for it, the same way a pianist would.
Mario Pavone’s Dialect Trio is a case in question. His bassist mentor has his own philosophy for the format and here it is, self explained by means of the music. A music with a strong collective sense, resulting from the equal cooperation of the three musicians involved, Pavone himself, pianist Matt Mitchell and drummer Tyshawn Sorey, all of them protagonists of their own respective projects. And what a magnificent music it is, not because there’s any individual compromises , but considering that they manage to be highly cohesive through all the clashes and differences. This is a lesson about how to live in society.
